Almond Beach Resort is an affordable family-friendly all inclusive resort, on the prestigious West Coast of Barbados. The property sits on a beautiful 1-km (half-mile) stretch of calm, beautiful beach in Heywoods, St. Peter. It is located only 30 minutes from the capital, Bridgetown, and 45 minutes from Grantley Adams International Airport.

The resort’s 135 rooms, restaurants and facilities are located in the Southern section of the former Almond Beach Village. Sun Group Hotels recently renovated the property, updating and refreshing room blocks, dining areas, pools and children’s areas for its reopening at a four-star standard.

Almond Beach Resort Reviews: The Positive

  • The food is good,  offering a la carte and buffet options
  • The Staff are friendly and courteous.  They will do their best to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
  • The rooms are spacious and clean.
  • There are several pools to choose from which are clean and inviting.  Sun beds and umbrellas are not a problem.
  • The beach is stunning with plenty of sun beds available.  The water is perfect for swimming.  If the water gets a bit choppy the life guards keep a good watch out.
  • The Water Sports team and amenities are awesome.
  • Inclusive excursions are lots of fun.  Jeep Safari, Island Tour, Glass Bottom Boat, Reef Fishing.
  • Evening entertainment is good..
  • Gardens and grounds are well maintained.
  • There is a lovely Tea Room where you can go and make tea and coffee throughout the day.  Afternoon tea is delicious with sandwiches and cakes, etc.
  • There is a Kids Club available.  Everyday outside of the kids club they have a printed itinerary of the days activities.
  • It is a nice little stroll to the quant town of Speightown.
  • Guests are able to visit Almond Beach’s sister hotel, The Sugar Cane Club, once during your stay.

Almond Beach Resort Reviews: The Negative

  • The Hotel is a little tired looking in places.
  • Some of the Rooms are a bit dated, Bathrooms included.
  • Some repetition from  day to day with the menu.
  • Part of the Hotel is closed down.
  • All Three of the restaurants may not be open at the same time.
  • Pools are shallow.  The deepest one being four feet.

Other considerations

  • A destination wedding and honeymoon can be planned at the Almond Beach Resort.
  • There is coral in some areas of the ocean floor.  But there is plenty of clear places to play and swim.
  • At Almond Beach Resort there is plenty to do if you want action  and lots of relaxation to be had if lying on the beach is your preference.

There are 3 Restaurants and 2 Bars at the Almond Beach Resort, plus, exchange dining at their sister hotel, The Sugar Cane Club Hotel, for a change of scenery.
The Reef Restaurant and Bar
An open-air family friendly seafront restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and, dinner daily.  During the daytime the restaurant is casual, serving extensive Caribbean-themed buffets.
Breakfast hours:  7:30-10AM
Lunch hours:  12:00-3PM
Dinner hours:  6:30-9:30PM-The chef serves creative seafood selections.  Reservations are required and the dress code is elegant casual.  Long pants are required for gentlemen in the evening.
Enid’s Restaurant
A Bajan-style restaurant with open-air dining serving a la carte local foods for lunch and dinner.
Lunch hours:  12:30-2:30-dress code is casual
Dinner hours:  6:30-9:30-reservations are required and the dress code is smart casual with long pants required for gentlemen.
Horizon Restaurant
An open-air and indoor dining with themed night-time buffets complete with a full carvery.  The restaurant features live entertainment 3 nights weekly.

  • The Staff displays outstanding levels of customer service.  They make sure your stay is complete.
  • The Food is very good.  There are 3 restaurants to chose from.  Azul’s, which is fine dining,  and,  extremely good,  is situated in beautiful waters edge surroundings.  The Mermaid,  being the main restaurant, overlooks the ocean,  so you get a nice sea breeze,  and,  the Fish Pot,  which is located near the family pool. The food is of a high quality,  and, is said to be very tasty in all 3 of the  restaurants.
  • The Rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean, and,  the beds are very comfortable.
  • There are 2 pools, one adults only,  and,  the other pool is for families.
  • The Sun Beds are large with comfortable cushions.  There is enough for everyone without putting towels down to save them.
  • The beach is small and has a private feel to it.  There are plenty of Sun Beds with canopies on the beach.
  • There is wonderful bar service around the pools, hot tubs, and,  on the beach.
  • There is an excellent water sports team, they are encouraging and helpful,  to make use of the amenities available,  kayaks, boogie boards, snorkeling gear, etc.
  • Kids Club is a big hit with the children.  The staff are very friendly and interact with the children.  The children do not want to leave.
  • The hotel grounds and communal areas are immaculate.

  • Seaweed can be a big problem.  The dedicated staff work tirelessly to clean the beach daily.
  • You have to pay extra for some dishes at the Azul restaurant.
  • Some guests say the food options are relatively fewer compared to larger all inclusive hotels.
  • Some of the bathrooms are dated and could use some refurbishment.
  • Mini frig in room is only stocked with water.

  • It is a 10 to 15 minute walk to St. Lawrence Gap and to Oistins, (Oistins Fish Fry), is the highlight on Friday night,  and the place to be.
  • Guest say, Mr. Best the manager, regularly walks around the grounds checking to see that all is ok,  and, he is happy to stop and chat.
  • It is the personal touches that make this hotel unique.  The quick spray of eucalyptus oil on your feet to cool you down.  The bowls of ice cream that are brought around to all the guests relaxing by the pools, hot tubs, or at the beach in the afternoon,  and, the endless non stop drinks.

  • The Staff are exceptional.  They are extremely helpful and work very hard to make sure you have all you require.
  • The Food is very good, of a high standard, and something for every taste.  There are three restaurants to chose from:  Rachel’s,  serving  a la carte, Chopstix Noodle Bar,   serving Asian cuisine, and,  the Drifters Beach Bar,  having buffet options.  You may even get to experience the dancing Chef,  Zac.
  • The Rooms are spacious and clean.  The beds are very comfortable.
  • Entertainment is enjoyable.
  • The Kids Club is good.  There is a lot for the young ones to do.
  • It is a nice walk along the beach and onto the boardwalk.
  • The grounds are well maintained.
  •  Central Location.  There is a bus stop right out side of the hotel.  The buses are frequent and cheap,  making it easy to travel.
  • It is right across from the local Horse Racing Track,  which is great fun.
  • Overall good value for the money.

  • The Beach is small.  Swimming shoes is a must due to coral on the ocean floor.  Walk either left,  or  right,  and,  you will find an easier access for swimming.
  • Seaweed can be a problem which creates a foul smell.
  • The pool area is small,  the depth of the pool is 3′ 6″.   It can get a little cramped if the hotel is fully occupied.  Sun beds become limited.
  • The pool tiles and surrounding  area can get very slippery when wet.
  • Some of the guest rooms,  including the bathrooms,  are a bit tired.   They could use a makeover.
  • There are a lot of stairs around the hotel,  probably not great for people with mobility difficulties.
  • Not truly all inclusive, (mini bar not stocked, no sodas or water in frig.), etc.,  unless you pay extra to upgrade to a Club Members Package.
  • Gym is small and old.  Installations are not great.

  • Some plantation rooms face or are near a busy and noisy road.
  • The location is somewhat isolated, it is not walking distance to any restaurants or nightlife.

  • The Honeymoon Suite is 2 floors and worth the upgrade for many guests.
  • Sargassum seaweed is a natural phenomena affecting the entire island and the Eastern Caribbean. Barbados in particular has been experiencing it the last 3 years.  This year has proven to be the worst on record.  The staff work diligently,  even using mechanical labor,  to remove it.  Some days are worse than others.
  • The staff will run you up to a different beach free of charge.
  • The Savannah Beach Hotel is one of the oldest on the island.  It is described by many guests as small, quant, and charming.  Many guests think by being small,  it is easy to meet other guests,  which adds to your holiday experience.
  • Honeymoon suite is 2 floors and worth the upgrade for many guests.

  • The Staff are second to none.  They create a very welcoming atmosphere in the hotel.  The staff  go above and beyond to make a guest’s special occasion memorable, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
  • The Food is delicious.  The meals are served a la carte, are of an excellent quality,  and cooked fresh.  Menus are changed every 2 days.  The chef is happy to prepare meals adhering to special dietary needs.
  • The Rooms are spacious and clean with comfortable beds.
  • Balconies are spacious with a breathtaking view of the ocean.  There is lighting on the balcony for reading at night, if so inclined.
  • There are plenty of sun beds and umbrellas by the pool and on the beach.
  • The Lagoon area with coral is great for getting into the water and doing a little snorkeling.
  • The Bar is top notch.  Drinks are readily available and empty glasses are quickly filled.  Cocktails are delicious.
  • There is an amazing view from the bar as the sun goes down.
  • The boardwalk is perfect for strolls.
  • Great Location.  To the right are beautiful long beach walks.  To the left is the boardwalk to Rockley Beach,  with a few restaurants and bars along the way.  Just off the boardwalk and over the road are shops, chemist, etc.
  •  The Reggae bus stop is just outside the door of the hotel.
  •  The Hotel is small which makes meeting other guests easy.
  • Wi Fi is good in the rooms.

Negative reviews of the SoCo hotel

  • Certain food and drink items cost extra,  lobster, steak, and certain wines.
  • There is no nightly entertainment.
  • The hotel is on the main road.  You may hear traffic with horns early in the morning.
  • There is no elevator.  Anybody with mobility issues may find the hotel difficult to get around.  The reception and entrance are on the first floor.  There are steps to the beach.  The bar and restaurants are on the ground floor.
  • There is no exercise facility on the property.  The hotel will provide connections to a nearby facility if so desired.

Other considerations at The SoCo Hotel

  • Some guests report that this hotel could be restrictive to small children due to the lack of facilities available.
  • Rooms 101 and 102 are ground level and look out over the bar.
  • A wedding destination can be planned at the So Co Hotel.  The wedding coordinator will make it her mission to make your wedding day absolutely perfect.
  • Michelle, the activities director, is extremely knowledgeable of the island.  If you want to book trips and activities,  she has you covered.
  •  The SoCo Bajan rum tasting challenge conducted by Michelle on Wednesday mornings is quite the experience.  Guests say plan on relaxing by the pool or on the beach in the afternoon.
  • If you are looking for a nice peaceful place to relax,  where you get extremely good personal service,  then this may be the place for you.
